In 2021, the ASEAN concentrated orange juice market decreased by -6.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. After four years of decline, shipments abroad of concentrated orange juice increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together comprising a 12% share of total exports. The Philippines (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of concentrated orange juice. At the same time, Vietnam (+5.7%) and the Philippines (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012-2021. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.2%) and Malaysia (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand increased by +4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest concentrated orange juice supplier in ASEAN, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6.1% share.

In Thailand, concentrated orange juice exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+2.5% per year) and Malaysia (-12.8% per year).

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of concentrated orange juice imported in ASEAN reduced to X tons, falling by -9.6% compared with the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons), distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) were the key importers of concentrated orange juice, together comprising 92% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total imports. The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 5.7%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
