In 2021, the South Asian concentrated orange juice market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +2.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 51% against the previous year. In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of concentrated orange juice, when their volume increased by 28% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Pakistan was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nepal (X tons), achieving a 39% share of total exports.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the largest concentrated orange juice supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nepal ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Nepal amounted to $X per ton.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of concentrated orange juice increased by 71% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India was the largest importer of concentrated orange juice in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2021. Maldives (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Sri Lanka (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to concentrated orange juice imports into India stood at +5.7%. At the same time, Maldives (+18.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Maldives emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-8.0%), Afghanistan (-11.5%) and Pakistan (-32.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+39 p.p.) and Maldives (+10 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Pakistan saw its share reduced by -4.1%, -5.2% and -41.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported concentrated orange juice in Southern Asia, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with an 8.5% share.

In India, concentrated orange juice imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Maldives (+18.6% per year) and Sri Lanka (-7.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
