Photographic Paper Market Size in MERCOSUR

For the fourth year in a row, the MERCOSUR photographic paper market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -4.4% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the market value increased by 7% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic paper production contracted remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 618% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles were finally on the rise to reach X square meters after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a precipitous shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Brazil prevails in exports structure, accounting for X square meters, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Chile (X square meters), constituting an 8.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ecuador (X square meters) and Peru (X square meters) - each resulted at a 4.1% share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -33.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ecuador (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +4.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-4.0%) and Chile (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile, Ecuador and Peru increased by +8.1, +2.3 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest photographic paper supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 30% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 1.8% share.

In Brazil, photographic paper exports shrank by an average annual rate of -33.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (-9.6% per year) and Peru (-4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per square meter, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per square meter), while Ecuador ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles imported in MERCOSUR contracted modestly to X square meters, waning by -2.3% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 1%. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Colombia (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Chile (16%), Argentina (6.2%) and Peru (5.6%). Paraguay (X square meters) and Uruguay (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -18.9% from 2012 to 2021. Uruguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Paraguay (-5.4%), Colombia (-8.8%), Chile (-9.1%), Peru (-12.5%) and Argentina (-21.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Colombia, Chile, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay increased by +9.5, +8.3, +1.9, +1.8 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest photographic paper importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Chile ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Peru, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, which together accounted for a further 23%.

Among the main importing countries, Uruguay, with a CAGR of -0.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 8%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per square meter), while Brazil ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
