The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -29.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $255M. From 2017 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

Germany (13K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of filter block production, accounting for 43% of total volume. Moreover, filter block production in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (4.9K tons), threefold. The Czech Republic (3.1K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

In Germany, filter block production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (+0.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (+0.2% per year).

Imports

In 2022, global filter block imports surged to 33K tons, increasing by 24% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 38K tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, filter block imports rose slightly to $187M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. By contrast, Russia (-1.5%) and China (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Global import price peaked at $6,791 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($11,869 per ton), while Greece ($1,133 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

In 2022, shipments abroad of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp increased by 12% to 32K tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Germany was the key exporting country with an export of around 13K tons, which recorded 42% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (4.7K tons), the Czech Republic (3.1K tons), the UK (2.5K tons) and Switzerland (2.2K tons), together generating a 39% share of total exports. The following exporters - Denmark (744 tons) and France (554 tons) - each recorded a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to filter block exports from Germany stood at +2.6%. At the same time, Thailand (+14.3%), the Czech Republic (+13.2%), Denmark (+9.6%), Switzerland (+1.8%) and the UK (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Thailand (+9.4 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+5.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the UK and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -3.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($85M) remains the largest filter block supplier worldwide, comprising 37% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($23M), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Denmark, with an 8.5% share.

In Germany, filter block exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+12.7% per year) and Denmark (+8.7% per year).

Export Prices By Country
