From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the leading consuming countries, was attained by Serbia (with a CAGR of +55.3%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plain postcard markets worldwide were Japan ($75M), China ($57M) and Germany ($37M), together comprising 20% of the global market. The United States, Russia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, the UK, Brazil, India, Serbia and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +52.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Production

In 2022, production of letter cards, plain postcards and correspondence cards decreased by -13.2% to 88K tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a eight-year rising trend. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 29%. Global production peaked at 101K tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, plain postcard production shrank to $738M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 24%. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $788M in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (13K tons), the United States (7.7K tons) and India (5.3K tons), with a combined 30% share of global production. Japan, Pakistan, Germany, Russia, Nigeria, Indonesia, Brazil, Bangladesh, Serbia and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Serbia (with a CAGR of +51.0%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

Import Prices By Country

The average plain postcard import price stood at $7,285 per ton in 2022, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($16,722 per ton), while Ethiopia ($1,672 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The global exports peaked at 11K tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plain postcard exports skyrocketed to $55M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight reduction. Spain (546 tons) took a 7.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (4.7%). The following exporters - Germany (322 tons), the Czech Republic (297 tons), Italy (279 tons), the Netherlands (186 tons), the UK (172 tons) and France (120 tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +41.9%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($12M), the United States ($7.2M) and Italy ($5.2M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 43% of global exports. France, Germany, Vietnam, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, India, with a CAGR of +34.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average plain postcard export price stood at $7,392 per ton in 2022, growing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($28,734 per ton), while India ($1,448 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
