In 2021, the Egyptian concentrated orange juice market decreased by -0.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption posted resilient growth. Concentrated orange juice consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of concentrated orange juice increased by 38% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 172% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 166%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the main destinations of concentrated orange juice exports from Egypt, together comprising 59% of total exports. Libya, Oman, India, Tunisia, Greece and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +67.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for concentrated orange juice exported from Egypt were Germany ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 56% of total exports. Libya, India, Tunisia, Oman, Greece and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Oman, with a CAGR of +61.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average concentrated orange juice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 66%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 195% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 194% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest concentrated orange juice supplier to Egypt, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, concentrated orange juice imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Denmark (X tons), more than tenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Saudi Arabia stood at +28.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+94.2% per year) and Spain (+8.3% per year).
