Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, self-adhesive printed label exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 22%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of self-adhesive printed labels, achieving 53% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Uganda (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 31% share of total exports. The following exporters - Madagascar (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each reached a 6.6% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uganda (+43.6%), Madagascar (+24.3%), Tanzania (+15.8%), Senegal (+13.3%) and Kenya (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.6% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uganda, Tanzania and Madagascar increased by +12, +3.3 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest self-adhesive printed label supplier in Africa, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, self-adhesive printed label exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+2.6% per year) and Uganda (+37.6% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of self-adhesive printed labels, namely Tunisia, Mozambique, Cameroon, Tanzania, South Africa, Togo, Kenya, Morocco, Ethiopia, Ghana, Angola and Burundi, represented more than half of total import. Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +19.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In Tunisia, self-adhesive printed label imports increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-3.3% per year) and Cameroon (+6.3% per year).
