Whisky Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan whisky market reduced to $X in 2022, declining by X% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, recorded a resilient increase. Whisky consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, approx. X litres of whisky were exported from Uganda; declining by X% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whisky exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Sudan (X litres) was the main destination for whisky exports from Uganda, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, whisky exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X litres), ninefold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Sudan totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (X% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for whisky exported from Uganda were Kenya ($X), South Sudan ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Germany and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Germany, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by X%. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, approx. X litres of whisky were imported into Uganda; which is down by X% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, whisky imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%.
