China (2.7B litres) remains the largest cider, perry and mead consuming country worldwide, accounting for 19% of total volume. Moreover, cider, perry and mead consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the UK (1.1B litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (1.1B litres), with a 7.8% share.

In China, cider, perry and mead consumption expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: the UK (+1.0% per year) and the United States (+2.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($5.1B), Japan ($4.9B) and India ($3.2B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, together accounting for 20% of the global market. The United States, the UK, Indonesia, Germany, Mexico, Pakistan, Brazil, South Korea and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $70.1B. From 2014 to 2022, global production growth remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

China (2.7B litres) remains the largest cider, perry and mead producing country worldwide, accounting for 19% of total volume. Moreover, cider, perry and mead production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United States (1B litres), threefold. India (1B litres) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +1.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United States (+2.1% per year) and India (+4.4% per year).

Imports

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, when their volume decreased by -6.3% to 1.2B litres. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 1.2B litres in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports dropped to $1.8B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $2B, and then reduced in the following year.

By contrast, Germany (-1.1%) and Japan (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States, Botswana, Israel and South Korea increased by +5.3, +2.6, +2.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cider, perry and mead importing markets worldwide were the United States ($268M), the UK ($263M) and Japan ($80M), with a combined 34% share of global imports.
