In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Portugal (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fresh whole chicken to Spain, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, fresh whole chicken imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Portugal stood at +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+19.8% per year) and France (-11.9% per year).

In terms of the main suppliers, Denmark, with a CAGR of +66.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average fresh whole chicken import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
