For the seventh year in a row, the SADC other papers packaging market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 18% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption posted a prominent expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Other Papers Packaging Production in SADC

In value terms, other papers packaging production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of other papers packaging increased by 214% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 399%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, other papers packaging exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 395%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporter of other papers packaging in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), making up a 14% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to other papers packaging exports from South Africa stood at -7.6%. At the same time, Tanzania (+21.9%) and Swaziland (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Swaziland (+11 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest other papers packaging supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

In South Africa, other papers packaging exports declined by an average annual rate of -9.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+10.5% per year) and Tanzania (+18.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -34.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 61%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Other papers packaging imports soared to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 56% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, other papers packaging imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Malawi (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to other papers packaging imports into South Africa stood at +8.5%. At the same time, Botswana (+41.3%) and Malawi (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +41.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Botswana increased by +15 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported other papers packaging in SADC, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malawi ($X), with a 4.1% share of total imports.
