In 2022, the average meat and poultry yield in SADC reduced modestly to X kg per head, waning by X% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, meat and poultry exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporter of meat and poultry in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Tanzania (X%). Zambia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest meat and poultry supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, meat and poultry imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) and Angola (X tons) were the major importers of meat and poultry in SADC, together amounting to near X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), creating a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Comoros (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Comoros (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Angola ($X), South Africa ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total imports. Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Comoros lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Comoros, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
