Fresh Whole Chicken Market Size in SADC

The SADC fresh whole chicken market fell slightly to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -5.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 22%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), with a combined 59% share of total production. These countries were followed by Malawi, Madagascar, Angola, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, overseas shipments of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -77% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 284%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 364%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), comprising a 10% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh whole chicken exports from South Africa stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Swaziland (+60.6%) and Malawi (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +60.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Malawi and Swaziland increased by +18, +5 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fresh whole chicken supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malawi ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -50.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 355% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 374%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of fresh or chilled whole chickens, making up 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together creating a 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +25.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Lesotho ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Angola, with a CAGR of +27.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -19.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 30%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
