Paperboard Case Material Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2022, the East Asian paperboard case material market decreased by -0.7% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -2.3% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 81%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of paperboard case materials decreased by -0.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 32%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the largest exporters of paperboard case materials in 2022, reaching near 41% and 34% of total exports, respectively. South Korea (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by China (X tons). All these countries together took near 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +30.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 84% of total exports.

Japan, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of paperboard case materials decreased by -8.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 122% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 85%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

China prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paperboard case materials imports, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of China (+31 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Korea (-8.1 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-10.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paperboard case materials in Eastern Asia, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 4.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +21.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+3.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+0.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
