Sodium Citrate Manufacturing Process

Sodium citrate is a white, crystalline organic salt that has a wide range of applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and textile industries. It is commonly used as a food additive, a stabilizer, and an emulsifier. Sodium citrate is the sodium salt of citric acid, which is a weak organic acid found in citrus fruits.

The manufacturing process of sodium citrate involves the reaction of citric acid with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. The reaction results in the formation of sodium citrate, along with water and carbon dioxide. The process can be broken down into several steps, including:

Step 1: Citric acid production

Citric acid is produced by the fermentation of glucose or sucrose by microorganisms such as Aspergillus niger or Candida spp. The process involves the conversion of sugar into citric acid through a series of biochemical reactions.

Step 2: Neutralization

Citric acid is neutralized with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate to form sodium citrate. The neutralization reaction is typically carried out in a stainless steel reactor under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure. The pH of the reaction mixture is closely monitored to ensure that the pH remains within a specific range.

Step 3: Crystallization

The sodium citrate solution obtained from the neutralization reaction is then concentrated to a specific concentration using a vacuum evaporator. The concentrated solution is then cooled, and crystals of sodium citrate dihydrate are formed. The crystals are separated from the mother liquor using a centrifuge or a filter press.

Step 4: Drying

The sodium citrate crystals are dried to remove any remaining moisture. The drying process can be carried out using a fluidized bed dryer or a rotary dryer. The dried crystals are then packed in moisture-proof containers for storage and transportation.
