In value terms, silk yarn imports skyrocketed to $313M in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. Global imports peaked at $432M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Italy (1.6K tons), distantly followed by Japan (862 tons), Nigeria (697 tons), India (598 tons) and Pakistan (323 tons) represented the major importers of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, together creating 63% of total imports. Nepal (277 tons), the United States (225 tons), France (164 tons), Romania (155 tons), Slovenia (129 tons) and Vietnam (106 tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at 13K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, silk yarn exports surged to $371M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at $570M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports By Country

In 2022, China (3.1K tons) represented the key exporter of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, committing 48% of total exports. Romania (926 tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (9.7%), Italy (8.3%) and Brazil (5.1%). In value terms, China ($160M) remains the largest silk yarn supplier worldwide, comprising 43% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($70M), with a 19% share of global exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.
