In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in production of pimenta pepper, when its volume decreased by -10.3% to 123K tons. Over the period under review, the total production indicated resilient growth from 2017 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +77.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Pimenta pepper production peaked at 137K tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year. Pimenta pepper output in Benin indicated prominent growth, which was largely conditioned by strong growth of the harvested area and a resilient increase in yield figures.
In value terms, pimenta pepper production amounted to $77M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 119%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $85M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the pimenta pepper harvested area in Benin shrank dramatically to 28K ha, which is down by -16% against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of 33K ha, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

The average yield of pimenta pepper in Benin stood at 4.5 tons per ha in 2022, surging by 6.9% against 2021. In general, the yield indicated resilient growth from 2017 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper yield decreased by -8.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of 4.9 tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the average pimenta pepper yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.
