The average import price for sunflower seed stood at $710 per ton in 2022, rising by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($1,359 per ton), while the price for Austria ($562 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($2,759 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($534 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, overseas purchases of sunflower seed were finally on the rise to reach 195K tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent.
