US Secondary Aluminum Prices Moderately Increase to $3,128/Ton

U.S. Secondary Aluminum Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the secondary aluminum price amounted to $3,128 per ton (CIF, US), rising by 7.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 an increase of 10% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,033 per ton. From June 2022 to February 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Australia ($3,325 per ton) and Canada ($3,319 per ton), while the price for India ($2,522 per ton) and Bahrain ($2,632 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

U.S. Secondary Aluminum Imports

In February 2023, imports of secondary aluminum into the United States fell to 57K tons, waning by -9% compared with the previous month's figure. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 62% m-o-m.

In value terms, secondary aluminum imports reduced modestly to $178M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 63% month-to-month.

U.S. Secondary Aluminum Imports by Country

Canada (21K tons), the United Arab Emirates (12K tons) and Qatar (11K tons) were the main suppliers of secondary aluminum imports to the United States, together comprising 78% of total imports. Bahrain, Mexico, India, Sweden and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +139.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest secondary aluminum suppliers to the United States were Canada ($70M), the United Arab Emirates ($36M) and Qatar ($34M), with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Bahrain, Mexico, Sweden, India and Australia, which together accounted for a further 17%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Sweden, with a CAGR of +83.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
