In 2023, Niger (X tons) was the key exporter of preserved tomatoes, comprising X% of total exports. Liberia (X tons) took an X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (X%) and Nigeria (X%). Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Liberia (X%) and Senegal (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Nigeria (X%) and Ghana (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Niger and Liberia increased by X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2023, overseas purchases of preserved tomatoes increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports shrank slightly to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Mauritania dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together making up a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Imports into Mauritania increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Benin (X%), Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X%), Guinea (X%), Senegal (X%) and Mali (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Ghana and Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cabo Verde (X%) and Cote d'Ivoire (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritania (X p.p.), Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X p.p.) and Benin (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Nigeria (X p.p.), Cabo Verde (X p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, falling by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
