Sweet Potato Market Size in Southern Asia
The South Asian sweet potato market fell to $X in 2023, dropping by X% against the previous year. Sweet Potato Production in Southern Asia

The country with the largest volume of sweet potato production was India (X tons), accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, sweet potato production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (X tons), fourfold.
In India, sweet potato production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Bangladesh (X% per year) and Sri Lanka (X% per year).
The average sweet potato yield fell modestly to X tons per ha in 2023, which is down by X% compared with 2022 figures. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by X%. Over the period under review, the sweet potato yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The sweet potato harvested area dropped modestly to X ha in 2023, remaining stable against 2022 figures. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia
In 2023, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of sweet potatoes, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2022, and then declined modestly in the following year.
In value terms, sweet potato exports fell to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
India was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded X% of total exports. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Sri Lanka (X%) and Pakistan (X%).
Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Bangladesh (X%), Pakistan (X%) and Sri Lanka (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of Bangladesh (X p.p.), Sri Lanka (X p.p.) and Pakistan (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of India (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest sweet potato supplying countries in Southern Asia were Sri Lanka ($X), India ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2023, dropping by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports in Southern Asia
In 2023, approx. X tons of sweet potatoes were imported in Southern Asia; waning by X% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2023, Maldives (X tons) represented the main importer of sweet potatoes, mixing up X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nepal (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons) and Bhutan (X tons), together generating a X% share of total imports. India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to sweet potato imports into Maldives stood at X%. At the same time, India (X%), Nepal (X%), Bhutan (X%) and Afghanistan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan and India increased by X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Maldives ($X), Nepal ($X) and Afghanistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total imports. India and Bhutan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
India, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2023, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
