In 2021, approx. X cubic meters of wooden particle board were imported in SADC; rising by 36% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wooden particle board imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Botswana (X cubic meters) represented the largest importer of wooden particle board, mixing up 37% of total imports. Swaziland (X cubic meters) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Lesotho (13%), Angola (8.9%), Namibia (6.6%) and Mauritius (5.4%). Madagascar (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Botswana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wooden particle board imports, with a CAGR of +28.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+15.9%), Swaziland (+9.3%), Mauritius (+6.5%) and Lesotho (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Angola (-2.8%) and Namibia (-20.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (+37 p.p.), Swaziland (+7.4 p.p.), Lesotho (+3.5 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.6 p.p.) and Mauritius (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and Namibia saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -47.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wooden particle board in SADC, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Lesotho, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Botswana totaled +28.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Swaziland (+7.1% per year) and Lesotho (-1.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, growing by 24% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per cubic meter), while Madagascar ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
