In 2022, the amount of palm oil exported in SADC fell notably to X tons, with a decrease of X% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, palm oil exports declined to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together mixing up a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Madagascar (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the palm oil exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (X%) and Mozambique (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Zambia (X%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%) and Tanzania (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar and Mozambique increased by X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, overseas purchases of palm oil increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, palm oil imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to X% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Tanzania (X%), Angola (X%) and Madagascar (X%). Zambia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (X%), Mozambique (X%), Madagascar (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (X%) and Zambia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (X p.p.), Tanzania (X p.p.), Madagascar (X p.p.) and Zimbabwe (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia, South Africa and Angola saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
