Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, (non-coniferous) exports increased by +51.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 58%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo was the largest exporting country with an export of around X cubic meters, which reached 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X cubic meters), Mozambique (X cubic meters) and Angola (X cubic meters), together comprising a 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X cubic meters) and Tanzania (X cubic meters) - each reached a 6.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) exports from Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Zambia (+41.6%), Tanzania (+7.4%), Angola (+7.2%) and South Africa (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +41.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mozambique (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Zambia and Angola increased by +13, +4.8, +3.3 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the largest industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) supplier in SADC, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 6.5% share.

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+3.2% per year) and Angola (+4.0% per year).

The export price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of industrial roundwood imported in SADC dropped rapidly to X cubic meters, waning by -32.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 102%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of (non-coniferous) imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, (non-coniferous) imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of industrial roundwood, namely Mozambique, Mauritius and Madagascar, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X cubic meters), Botswana (X cubic meters) and Namibia (X cubic meters), together generating a 19% share of total imports. Lesotho (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +51.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial roundwood in SADC, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8.5% share.

In Mauritius, industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+8.3% per year) and Namibia (-5.7% per year).

The import price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 167%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per cubic meter), while Madagascar ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
