Zinc Market Size in Kenya

Zinc exports from Kenya soared to X tons in 2021, growing by 50% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports posted a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, zinc exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 275% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

India (X tons) was the main destination for zinc exports from Kenya, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, zinc exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), fivefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya

Zinc imports into Kenya skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, growing by 18% against 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, zinc imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Australia (X tons), India (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of zinc imports to Kenya, together accounting for 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Spain, Germany and Finland, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +78.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
