In 2023, overseas shipments of nitrogen decreased by X% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, nitrogen exports expanded notably to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Belgium prevails in exports structure, resulting at X cubic meters, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. The Czech Republic (X cubic meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X cubic meters). All these countries together took near X% share of total exports. France (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters) and Ireland (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nitrogen exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Austria (X%), the Czech Republic (X%), Ireland (X%), Germany (X%) and France (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Poland (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Belgium increased by X percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest nitrogen supplying countries in the European Union were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. France, Austria, Poland and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Austria, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per cubic meter), while Belgium (less than $X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in overseas purchases of nitrogen, which increased by X% to X cubic meters in 2023. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, nitrogen imports rose sharply to $X in 2023. In general, imports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by X%. In 2023, the Netherlands (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Germany (X cubic meters), Slovakia (X cubic meters) and Belgium (X cubic meters) were the main importers of nitrogen, together constituting X% of total imports. France (X cubic meters), Denmark (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), Slovenia (X cubic meters), Luxembourg (X cubic meters), Bulgaria (X cubic meters), Greece (X cubic meters) and Hungary (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, nitrogen import price increased by X% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of X%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter.
