Zinc Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European zinc market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption posted a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2021, zinc exports in Eastern Europe reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -3.4% compared with 2020. Overall, exports showed a perceptible decrease. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) were the key exporters of zinc in 2021, accounting for approx. 47% and 39% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of zinc, when their volume increased by 23% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, zinc imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of zinc imports in 2021 were Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together reaching 63% of total import. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ukraine (8.1%), Romania (6.5%) and Hungary (5.5%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +37.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Among the main importing countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +43.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 24% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
