Tobacco Market Size in Denmark

The Danish tobacco market dropped notably to $X in 2021, waning by -72.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the market value increased by 7.2% against the previous year. Tobacco consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) increased by 49% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +53.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tobacco exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +78.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for tobacco exports from Denmark, with a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, tobacco exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Norway (X tons), sixfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +15.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (-2.7% per year) and the United States (+7.6% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for tobacco exports from Denmark, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Norway, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +10.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+12.7% per year) and Norway (+4.0% per year).

In 2021, the average tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 15%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Denmark

In 2021, purchases abroad of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tobacco imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 52%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) constituted the largest tobacco supplier to Denmark, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, tobacco imports from Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Greece (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Sweden amounted to +22.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-6.9% per year) and Greece (+109.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest tobacco suppliers to Denmark were Sweden ($X), Germany ($X) and Greece ($X), together accounting for 89% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +156.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -19.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+33.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
