Tomato Market Size in Africa

In 2023, the African tomato market decreased by X% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a six-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, consumption increased by X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2023, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. Mozambique, Morocco, Tunisia, Cameroon, Malawi, Kenya, Sudan, Angola, South Africa and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the average tomato yield in Africa declined to X tons per ha, with a decrease of X% against 2022 figures. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the tomato yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, the total area harvested in terms of tomatoes production in Africa expanded to X ha, increasing by X% against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by X%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. In 2023, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of tomatoes, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, tomato exports surged to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Morocco prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Morocco increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Tunisia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Ethiopia and Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (X p.p.) and Tunisia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a X% share.

In Morocco, tomato exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (X% per year) and Egypt (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, growing by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, tomato export price increased by X% against 2012 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports fell to $X in 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Somalia (X tons) represented roughly X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Libya (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons), together creating a X% share of total imports. Djibouti (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Libya ($X) and Somalia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, together accounting for X% of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
