In 2022, the African sugar market increased by X% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. Kenya, Morocco, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mozambique and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of sugar decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugar exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Swaziland (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main exporters of sugar in Africa, together accounting for near X% of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Mozambique (X%) and Zambia (X%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Zambia ($X per ton) and Mauritius ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of sugar, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, sugar imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) was the key importer of sugar in Africa, achieving X% of total import. South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
