Cabbage Market Size in Africa

After four years of growth, the African cabbage market decreased by X% to $X in 2023. The total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The country with the largest volume of cabbage production was Kenya (X tons), accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, cabbage production in Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (X tons), twofold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in Kenya amounted to X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Niger (X% per year) and Egypt (X% per year).

The average cabbage yield shrank modestly to X tons per ha in 2023, reducing by X% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2022, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, approx. X ha of cabbage and other brassicas were harvested in Africa; reducing by X% against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production reached the maximum at X ha in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Africa

For the seventh year in a row, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of cabbage and other brassicas, which increased by X% to X tons in 2023. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cabbage exports soared to $X in 2023. In general, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco was the major exporter of cabbage and other brassicas in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together creating a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ethiopia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each recorded a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage exports from Morocco stood at X%. At the same time, Mali (X%), Ethiopia (X%) and Egypt (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (X p.p.) and Mali (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ethiopia, Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco amounted to X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (X% per year) and South Africa (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2023, supplies from abroad of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports contracted slightly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Mauritania was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at X% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Lesotho (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) - each reached a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage imports into Mauritania stood at X%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Lesotho (X%), Swaziland (X%) and Djibouti (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Seychelles (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritania (X p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Swaziland (X p.p.), Lesotho (X p.p.), Seychelles (X p.p.) and Djibouti (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest cabbage importing markets in Africa were Mauritania ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Lesotho ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, picking up by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
