Tomato Price in Latvia (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average tomato import price amounted to $1,805 per ton, surging by 15% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a perceptible increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, tomato import price increased by +18.0% against July 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 an increase of 47% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,521 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($5,357 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($921 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+51.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tomato Price in Latvia (FOB) - 2023
The average tomato export price stood at $1,963 per ton in September 2023, increasing by 3% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated moderate growth from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, tomato export price increased by +9.1% against July 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 41% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $2,867 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($4,131 per ton), while the average price for exports to Estonia stood at $1,800 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+7.5%).
Tomato Imports in Latvia
In 2022, overseas purchases of tomatoes decreased by -4% to 23K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 10%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 24K tons, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, tomato imports expanded sharply to $42M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Tomato Exports in Latvia
For the fourth year in a row, Latvia recorded growth in overseas shipments of tomatoes, which increased by 1.2% to 6.5K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, tomato exports reached $14M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +47.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 26%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
