Smart Card Price in Canada (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average smart card import price amounted to $1.1 per unit, growing by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1.2 per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($3.5 per unit), while the price for Malaysia ($0.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Smart Card Price in Canada (FOB) - 2023
The average smart card export price stood at $545 per thousand units in September 2023, with a decrease of -4.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a measured expansion from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, smart card export price increased by +50.5% against July 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 an increase of 58% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $631 per thousand units in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($540 per thousand units), while the average price for exports to Mexico amounted to $78.0 per thousand units.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+6.1%).

In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, smart card exports surged to $32M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 81%.
