In value terms, the United States ($248M), China ($210M) and India ($187M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 38% share of the global market. Germany, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, France, South Korea, Russia, Malaysia and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +14.7%, saw the highest growth rate of market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 8.7%. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum volume at 193K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, screwdriver production expanded remarkably to $1.7B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $2B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
China (106K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of screwdriver production, comprising approx. 62% of total volume. Moreover, screwdriver production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (16K tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (6.6K tons), with a 3.9% share.
In China, screwdriver production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (-0.1% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.0% per year).
Imports
World Imports of Screwdrivers
In 2022, the amount of screwdrivers imported worldwide reached 108K tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, screwdriver imports dropped modestly to $967M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +19.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1B, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In 2022, the United States (19K tons), distantly followed by Germany (6.6K tons) were the main importers of screwdrivers, together making up 24% of total imports. Russia (4.3K tons), Malaysia (3.8K tons), France (3.6K tons), India (3.4K tons), Indonesia (3.3K tons), Poland (3.1K tons), Italy (2.9K tons), Denmark (2.8K tons), the UK (2.8K tons), Belgium (2.8K tons) and the Netherlands (2.8K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to screwdriver imports into the United States stood at +9.2%. At the same time, India (+19.4%), Malaysia (+17.7%), Denmark (+15.8%), Poland (+7.9%), Italy (+6.7%), France (+4.6%), the Netherlands (+4.3%), Indonesia (+4.3%), Russia (+2.9%), Germany (+2.5%) and Belgium (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the UK (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States, Malaysia, India and Denmark increased by +7.4, +2.5, +2.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest screwdriver importing markets worldwide were the United States ($189M), Germany ($104M) and France ($44M), together accounting for 35% of global imports. Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Russia, Belgium, Denmark, Malaysia, Indonesia and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Among the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +13.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
The average screwdriver import price stood at $8,938 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $10,133 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($15,894 per ton), while India ($1,964 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+5.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports
World Exports of Screwdrivers
In 2022, the amount of screwdrivers exported worldwide declined slightly to 97K tons, approximately equating 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 100K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, screwdriver exports totaled $992M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports By Country
China dominates exports structure, resulting at 69K tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (7.3K tons), committing a 7.6% share of total exports. Germany (4.3K tons), the Netherlands (2.1K tons), the Czech Republic (2K tons) and Belgium (1.6K tons) took a minor share of total exports.
China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of screwdrivers. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+5.8%), Belgium (+2.8%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.8%) and Germany (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +5.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (-2.5 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($450M) remains the largest screwdriver supplier worldwide, comprising 45% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($137M), with a 14% share of global exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +4.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+3.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average screwdriver export price amounted to $10,258 per ton, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 8.9% against the previous year. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($32,104 per ton), while China ($6,510 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
