In July 2023, the average steel, alloy; semi-finished products import price amounted to $3,462 per ton, which is down by -13.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 36% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $4,437 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Austria ($4,050 per ton), while the price for Spain ($3,010 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average steel, alloy; semi-finished products export price stood at $4,632 per ton in 2022, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $8,681 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($5,676 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($2,499 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+44.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Steel, Alloy; Semi-Finished Products in Portugal

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of steel, alloy; semi-finished productses decreased by -3.2% to 7.6K tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 124%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 7.9K tons, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, steel, alloy; semi-finished products imports skyrocketed to $25M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
