In 2022, the average import price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint amounted to $940 per ton, falling by -5.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $992 per ton, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($1,164 per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($630 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint stood at $741 per ton in 2022, reducing by -11.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,226 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($2,619 per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($556 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in Vietnam
In 2022, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint imports into Vietnam reduced to 1.8M tons, falling by -7.5% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.9M tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint imports contracted to $1.7B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.9B, and then fell in the following year.
