In January 2024, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $313 per ton, waning by -10.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 an increase of 451% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,630 per ton in October 2023; however, from November 2023 to January 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was China ($1,732 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($72.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -4.7% to 50K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 76%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 58K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds rose to $12M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
