The average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $1,329 per ton in November 2023, with an increase of 2.9% against the previous month. Over the period from November 2022 to November 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 39% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,496 per ton. From March 2023 to November 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($3,067 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($775 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $920 per ton in 2022, declining by -27.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 66% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,408 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($1,650 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($545 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Macao SAR (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds, when their volume decreased by -80.9% to 7.1K tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 254%.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds dropped notably to $7.3M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 398% against the previous year.
