The average import price for melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes stood at $589 per ton in October 2023, with an increase of 29% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 60% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,826 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to October 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,529 per ton), while the price for Russia ($267 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 36% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,973 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($774 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania amounted to $666 per ton.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (-0.3%).

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes decreased by -32.1% to 20K tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 30K tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, imports of melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes contracted modestly to $15M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
