Price for Iron Ore and Concentrate, Non-Agglomerated in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average import price for iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated stood at $114 per ton in July 2023, with an increase of 4.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 15% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $134 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from South Africa ($139 per ton) and Canada ($131 per ton), while the price for Australia ($107 per ton) and Brazil ($124 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average export price for iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated amounted to $751 per ton, waning by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 124%. The export price peaked at $1,788 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($1,971 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($534 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+15.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
