Price for Ether-Alcohols and Their Halogenated, Sulphonated, Nitrated or Nitrosated Derivatives in Malaysia (FOB) - 2024
In December 2023, the average export price for ether-alcohols and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives (excluding 2,2-oxydiethanol) amounted to $1,128 per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 an increase of 107% against the previous month. The export price peaked in December 2023.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In December 2023, the countries with the highest prices were India ($1,372 per ton) and Indonesia ($1,372 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($1,031 per ton) and China ($1,098 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for ether-alcohols and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives (excluding 2,2-oxydiethanol) amounted to $2,360 per ton, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 40%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($2,775 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($1,138 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Ether-Alcohols and Their Halogenated, Sulphonated, Nitrated or Nitrosated Derivatives in Malaysia
In 2022, overseas shipments of ether-alcohols and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives (excluding 2,2-oxydiethanol) decreased by -48.5% to 64K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 49%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 123K tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, exports of ether-alcohols and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives (excluding 2,2-oxydiethanol) contracted sharply to $87M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $133M, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In 2022, purchases abroad of ether-alcohols and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives (excluding 2,2-oxydiethanol) decreased by -35.6% to 10K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 16K tons, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, imports of ether-alcohols and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives (excluding 2,2-oxydiethanol) shrank remarkably to $24M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +24.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 56%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $30M, and then shrank notably in the following year.
