Price for Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021

In December 2021, the average aluminium waste and scrap import price amounted to $1,522 per ton, falling by -1.6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2021 an increase of 8.9% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,558 per ton. From November 2021 to December 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($1,918 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($848 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In December 2021, the average aluminium waste and scrap export price amounted to $2,322 per ton, increasing by 43% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2021 an increase of 116% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,549 per ton. From September 2021 to December 2021, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($2,610 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($1,334 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Malaysia

In 2022, approx. 459K tons of aluminium waste and scraps were imported into Malaysia; rising by 36% against 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -20.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 51%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 579K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap imports skyrocketed to $462M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $588M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap exports fell to $53M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 15%.
