Price for Aluminium; Plates, Sheets and Strip, Thickness Exceeding 0.2mm, Alloys, Rectangular (Including Square) in South Korea (FOB) - 2022
The average export price for aluminium; plates, sheets and strip, thickness exceeding 0.2mm, alloys, rectangular (including square)s stood at $3,272 per ton in December 2022, shrinking by -3.4% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 7.5% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $4,751 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to December 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In December 2022, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($3,878 per ton) and Thailand ($3,650 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($2,820 per ton) and India ($2,825 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In December 2022, the average import price for aluminium; plates, sheets and strip, thickness exceeding 0.2mm, alloys, rectangular (including square)s amounted to $4,336 per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 5.2% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $4,721 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to December 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,962 per ton), while the price for China ($3,589 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth consecutive year, South Korea recorded growth in overseas shipments of aluminium; plates, sheets and strip, thickness exceeding 0.2mm, alloys, rectangular (including square)s, which increased by 7.1% to 653K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, exports of aluminium; plates, sheets and strip, thickness exceeding 0.2mm, alloys, rectangular (including square)s soared to $2.6B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +74.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 39%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
