At the same time, China (+21.9%), Portugal (+4.4%), France (+3.7%) and Spain (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012-2022. Canada, Japan, Italy and South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, the United States ($760M) constitutes the largest market for imported pineapples worldwide, comprising 28% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($198M), with a 7.4% share of global imports. It was followed by China, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States stood at +2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-0.9% per year) and China (+22.5% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average pineapple import price amounted to $770 per ton, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Global import price peaked at $790 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of pineapples decreased by -5.1% to 3.2M tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at 3.7M tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pineapple exports expanded modestly to $2.2B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 18%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

In 2022, Costa Rica (1.9M tons) represented the major exporter of pineapples, committing 60% of total exports. The Philippines (332K tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (149K tons). All these countries together held approx. 15% share of total exports. Belgium (119K tons), the United States (119K tons), Honduras (81K tons) and Ecuador (62K tons) held a little share of total exports.

Costa Rica experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pineapples. At the same time, Honduras (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Honduras emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012-2022. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ecuador (-1.0%), the Philippines (-1.8%), Belgium (-3.5%) and the Netherlands (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Costa Rica (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Philippines (-1.7 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Costa Rica ($1B) remains the largest pineapple supplier worldwide, comprising 47% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($333M), with a 15% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.2% share.

In Costa Rica, pineapple exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+12.6% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.2% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average pineapple export price stood at $693 per ton in 2022, surging by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 9.9% against the previous year.
