Newsprint Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023
The average newsprint import price stood at $801 per ton in August 2023, with a decrease of -5.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 8.1% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1,095 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were China ($962 per ton) and Austria ($844 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($646 per ton) and South Korea ($786 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Newsprint Price in Australia (FOB) - 2023
The average newsprint export price stood at $536 per ton in August 2023, dropping by -1.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 22% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $683 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($892 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($389 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Newsprint Imports in Australia
In 2022, purchases abroad of newsprint decreased by -20.5% to 49K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 185%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 103K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, newsprint imports totaled $44M in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 177%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $57M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
