Metal clay is a unique crafting material made from fine metal particles mixed with a binder and water. It is moldable and can be sculpted like any other clay, but once it is fired in a kiln the binder burns away, leaving a solid metal object. The price of metal clay varies depending on the type of metal used, the amount of clay in each package, and the brand.
Silver clay, which is made from silver particles, is one of the most popular types of metal clay. It is also one of the most expensive because silver is a precious metal. A 25-gram package of silver clay can cost anywhere from $40-$70 depending on the brand. Gold clay, made from gold particles, is even more expensive. A 10-gram package can cost upwards of $200. Copper and bronze clays are less expensive and more readily available. They can cost anywhere from $15-$30 per 100 grams, depending on the brand.
In addition to the type of metal, the price of metal clay can also vary depending on the formula. Some clays are specifically designed for use with certain techniques, such as metal clay that is made for enameling or metal clay that has a longer drying time. These specialty clays can be more expensive than standard metal clay.
It is also worth noting that the cost of metal clay does not include the cost of firing it in a kiln. Many metal clay artists choose to invest in their own kiln, which can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Alternatively, metal clay can be fired at a local metalsmithing studio or community center for a fee.
While metal clay may not be the most cost-effective crafting material, many artists find the ability to create solid metal objects with such ease to be well worth the investment.
