The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +110.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

The United States was the key exporter of lactose and lactose syrup in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to 453K tons, which was approx. 42% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Germany (250K tons) and the Netherlands (121K tons), together creating a 35% share of total exports. France (47K tons), Italy (29K tons), New Zealand (28K tons), Poland (26K tons) and the UK (23K tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +43.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average lactose export price stood at $1,559 per ton in 2022, growing by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,931 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,057 per ton), while the UK ($791 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (-0.2%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
