The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 168%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.7M tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, granite block imports expanded modestly to $462M in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 223% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $883M. Imports By Country

China dominates imports structure, amounting to 1M tons, which was approx. 58% of total imports in 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+27.8%), Vietnam (+24.0%), Portugal (+17.2%), Maldives (+14.7%), Sweden (+8.6%) and Germany (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +27.8% from 2012-2022. France and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.2%), Thailand (-13.1%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+39 p.p.), Algeria (+3.8 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.5 p.p.) and Portugal (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-7.6 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-14.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($218M) constitutes the largest market for imported granite blocks and slabs worldwide, comprising 47% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Maldives ($28M), with a 6.1% share of global imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +11.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Maldives (+16.1% per year) and Algeria (+23.7% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($875 per ton), while Belgium ($111 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

World Exports of Granite Blocks And Slabs

In 2022, approx. 2.3M tons of granite blocks and slabs were exported worldwide; waning by -11.8% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 3.1M tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, granite block exports contracted to $421M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $615M. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports By Country

India (660K tons) and Brazil (626K tons) represented the largest exporters of granite blocks and slabs in 2022, finishing at approx. 29% and 27% of total exports, respectively. Portugal (246K tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Turkey (120K tons). All these countries together took near 16% share of total exports. Iran, with a CAGR of +31.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average granite block export price stood at $184 per ton in 2022, rising by 5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 16%. The global export price peaked at $214 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($255 per ton), while Malaysia ($21 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
