The use of ferroalloys in the production of steel is crucial. They are added to improve the quality of steel produced by imparting certain desirable properties and removing unwanted ones.
For instance, when ferrochromium is added to steel, it increases its corrosion resistance and enhances its resistance to high temperatures. When ferromanganese is used, it integrates sulfur and oxygen and removes impurities from steel, thus enhancing its mechanical properties.
Ferroalloys come in different forms such as lumpy, pellets, and powders, and each variant has its own unique properties and uses. Lumpy ferroalloys are commonly used in the production of steel as an input material. They offer a high melting point, enable the absorption of carbon and other non-ferrous metals, and help to remove impurities from steel. Pellets are usually used to make ductile iron, while powders are involved in the transfer of electric power.
Silicon ferroalloys are one of the most commonly used ferroalloys for steel production. They contain silicon in high concentrations and are obtained by reducing quartz in the presence of coal. They impart desirable properties such as high tensile strength, excellent resistance to corrosion, and low extent of scaling. Silicon ferroalloys play an essential role in the manufacture of silicon steel, which is a high-quality magnetic steel used in the production of transformers, relays, and other electrical equipment.
Manganese is another element commonly found in ferroalloys. It is an incredibly versatile element, and its applications range from the production of fertilizers to metallurgical use in steel manufacturing. When added to steel, it helps to eliminate oxygen and sulfur, thus improving its surface finish. It also enhances the toughness, hardness, and abrasion resistance of the steel produced.
