Germany (98K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

Yield

In 2022, the global average currant and gooseberry yield was estimated at 4.9 tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2021. In general, the yield, however, recorded a slight contraction. In 2022, Germany (4.8K tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (2.5K tons), Italy (2K tons), Qatar (1.6K tons), the United States (1.3K tons), the United Arab Emirates (1.2K tons), France (0.9K tons) and Saudi Arabia (0.9K tons) were the main importers of currants and gooseberries, together comprising 75% of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (817 tons), Poland (506 tons) and Austria (322 tons) - together made up 8.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +50.9%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest currant and gooseberry importing markets worldwide were the Netherlands ($13M), Germany ($12M) and Qatar ($11M), with a combined 42% share of global imports. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 17%. The global exports peaked at 18K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports totaled $65M in 2022. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +36.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $69M. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports By Country

The Netherlands (4.4K tons) and Poland (4.3K tons) were the major exporters of currants and gooseberries in 2022, finishing at approx. 29% and 28% of total exports, respectively. Denmark (1,238 tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.1% share, followed by France (5.3%) and Spain (5.2%). Belgium (653 tons), the Czech Republic (502 tons), Germany (339 tons), India (256 tons), Ukraine (255 tons), Iran (242 tons) and Kyrgyzstan (230 tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +108.0%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($41M) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier worldwide, comprising 64% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($7M), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 7% share.

In the Netherlands, currant and gooseberry exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+0.9% per year) and Belgium (+0.7% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average currant and gooseberry export price amounted to $4,253 per ton, growing by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, currant and gooseberry export price increased by +18.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 25%.
